Large International Tumor Profiling Study of Colorectal Cancer Provides Key Treatment Insights for World’s Third Most Common Cancer

Caris Life Sciences®, a leading biosciences company focused on fulfilling the promise of personalized medicine, recently presented a large international tumor profiling study of colorectal cancer at the 2014 Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium this week in San Francisco, Calif. With more than 7,000 patients comprehensively profiled by Caris Molecular Intelligence™ the study represents the largest, multi-national analysis in a single laboratory setting of the main molecular anomalies in colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide, with metastatic disease accounting for 40 to 50 percent of newly diagnosed patients.

ASCO and the CAP Release Updated Guideline on HER2 Testing in Breast Cancer

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) recently issued a joint, updated guideline aimed at improving the accuracy and reporting of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) testing in patients with invasive breast cancer. The guideline update is based on a systematic review of medical research literature, providing oncologists and pathologists with detailed recommendations for how to test for HER2 overexpression, interpret the results, and recommend HER2-targeted therapies. The guideline, originally issued in 2007, is being published in ASCO’s Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) and the CAP’s Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. The joint guideline was prepared by an ASCO/CAP Update Committee consisting of experts in breast cancer and cancer biomarkers.

Study Published Showing Advantages of the PAM50 Gene Signature, the Basis for Prosigna, in Helping to Estimate Risk of Late Distant Recurrence in Postmenopausal Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer Patients

NanoString Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ: NSTG) a provider of life science tools for translational research and molecular diagnostic products, recently announced that a study published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute demonstrated that the PAM50 gene signature, which is the basis for the Prosigna™ Breast Cancer Prognostic Gene Signature Assay, provides important information to help estimate the risk of late distant recurrence in postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor positive (ER+) early-stage breast cancer. After comparing the PAM50 gene signature, the Oncotype DX® Breast Cancer Assay and the IHC4 score, the authors concluded that the PAM50 gene signature provided the strongest prognostic information regarding risk of distant recurrence five to 10 years following diagnosis in postmenopausal ER+ early-stage breast cancer patients treated with five years of endocrine therapy.
