New Data From Phase 2a Oral Mucositis Study Presented at American Association for Cancer Research Conference

SciClone Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that researchers have identified two unique gene clusters that differentiated subjects who responded to treatment in the Company’s phase 2a proof of concept study of SCV-07 for the prevention of severe oral mucositis (OM; WHO grades 3-4) in patients with advanced head and neck cancer. The Company believes that the discovery of these gene clusters may assist in providing the framework for effectively identifying those patients most likely to respond to SCV-07 in future clinical trials based on their individual genomic profile or gene signature.

DiagnoCure holds the worldwide rights to the PCA3 biomarker and, in 2003, granted an exclusive sub-license to Gen-Probe for diagnostic applications.

CROs Join with MJFF for Parkinson’s Biomarker Research

Covance, Parexel and Epitomics are working with the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) to develop biomarker candidates.

Initiation of the projects is part of efforts by MJFF to progress biomarker research. MJFF said there is “urgent need for an orchestrated, fieldwide strategy to drive tangible progress” in the sector and contract research organisations (CRO) have a role to play in this initiative.

UC San Diego Brain Tumor Treatment Program Launches Personalized Biomarker Clinical Study

The Brain Tumor Unit at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla, is launching a clinical trial that will examine the use of biomarkers to advance the treatment of malignant gliomas, brain tumors that start in the brain or spinal cord tissue. Annually, about 17,000 Americans are diagnosed with gliomas, which are difficult to treat and often fatal.
