Biomarker Combinations Successfully Discriminate Between Asthma and COPD

Researchers in Australia have identified a panel of four biomarkers that may aid in the diagnosis and management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study, published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found that the biomarkers may be used in different combinations to successfully identify patients with either of the airway diseases.

COPDF Announces Launch of COPD Biomarkers Qualification Consortium

The COPD Foundation announces the launch of an unprecedented collaborative effort to pool information on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): the COPD Biomarkers Qualification Consortium (CBQC). The CBQC brings together government agencies, academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies that will share research data on COPD biomarkers — indicators of disease progression/severity. The goal is to assemble data under the auspices of the Consortium that will permit official recognition of biomarkers that can improve disease monitoring and expedite new therapies for the world’s fourth leading cause of death.

UK launches Stratified Medicines Innovation Platform

The UK’s Technology Strategy Board has launched a new programme designed to place the country at the forefront of medicines tailored to smaller and more responsive subsets of patients.

The Stratified Medicines Innovation Platform will bring together researchers, policymakers and the private sector in an initiative drawing on government funding of over £50 million for innovative research and development in areas such as tumour profiling to improve cancer care and biomarker development to enhance drug effectiveness.

Researchers from Northwestern University and NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) have developed a method to detect early signs of lung cancer by examining cheek cells in humans using pioneering biophotonics technology.
