Restore Launches Pharmacogenetic Testing

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Restore Health, a leading personalized medicine company that provides specialty and compounded pharmaceuticals, announced that it is now offering pharmacogenetic testing that provides drug sensitivity information unique to each individual based upon their particular genetic makeup. Comprehensive medication management is now possible by understanding the interaction between a patient’s genetics and their entire drug regimen.

“We’re very excited to provide this new service to healthcare providers and their patients,” said Matt Wanderer, CEO for Restore Health. “This test clearly defines what drugs and combinations of drugs a person should – and should not – be prescribed, and when a patient’s custom medications should be custom compounded. It defines who you are in the most fundamental way. And because a person’s genotype doesn’t change through time, they only need to have the test done once.”

The stakes are high: a 2009 report issued by the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) found that 1.1 million Americans die annually from adverse drug reactions and the cost to insurance companies and U.S. taxpayers amounts to more than $289 billion per year.

“Any form of personalized medicine will likely include genetic testing,” said Christine Shaw, Ph.D., Director of Genomics for Restore Health. Dr. Shaw also serves as Assistant Professor of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. “Pharmacogenetic testing indicates the ability of an individual to metabolize prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs. The test results include a simple classification system, enabling physicians to quickly assess which classes of drugs will or will not work with a patient’s particular genetic makeup and to which drugs a patient may have adverse reaction.”

Shaw says that an individualized, personalized approach to prescription and dosage just makes sense. “Restore Health has worked with physicians for over 33 years to customize dose and delivery systems. With the advent of pharmacogenetic testing, the company is now able to provide physicians the information they need to provide the best therapeutic treatments for their patients.”

Murray I. Firestone, Ph.D., President of Restore Health, quoted speculative novelist William Gibson, saying, “‘The future is here. It’s just not widely distributed yet.’ Restore is working on that.”
