Study Shows Fit Elderly Patients Should be Considered for Therapy

Until there are more validated biomarkers to direct treatment decisions, many physicians use patient age to decide what therapy to give their patients. Literature data report that older patients often go undertreated because of concerns for limited tolerance to toxic therapies. A study, published in the November 2012 issue of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer’s (IASLC) Journal of Thoracic Oncology, says that fit elderly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients should be considered for salvage targeted therapy.

Astute Medical Announces Launch of Nephrocheck Test

Astute Medical, Inc. yesterday announced it has completed CE mark certification for its first product, the Nephrocheck™Test, and is commencing sales. The Nephrocheck™ Test utilizes two newly validated urinary biomarkers for risk assessment of acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients. The Nephrocheck™ Test is not available for sale in the United States.

Satiation Hormone Could Increase Risk of Diabetes, Heart Attack and Breast Cancer in Women

One of the body’s satiation hormones, neurotensin, could raise women’s risk of suffering one of three common and serious conditions: diabetes, cardiovascular disease and breast cancer. There is also a connection between the hormone and premature death in women, especially from cardiovascular disease. The findings have been presented in a study from Lund University in Sweden, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
