As a key step toward providing patients with treatments based on their own DNA profiles, the University of Michigan and the International Genomics Consortium (IGC) have launched a new joint venture that will help usher in an age of personalized medicine.

BioTime and OncoCyte Corporation Publish Data on the Gene COL10A1 as a Marker and Potential Diagnostic for a Wide Array of Human Cancers

BioTime, Inc. (NYSE MKT: BTX) and BioTime’s subsidiary OncoCyte Corporation today announced the publication of a scientific report on the gene COL10A1 and its potential as a marker for numerous types of human cancers. The paper, published in the peer-reviewed journal Future Oncology and available online today, describes the microarray-based approach used to identify COL10A1 as a pan-cancer biomarker with significantly elevated expression in diverse malignant tumor types including cancers of the breast, stomach, colon, lung, bladder, pancreas, and ovaries. In addition, the protein was shown to be specifically localized within tumor vasculature. Combined, these findings will be an important basis for the development and application of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, including the measurement of Collagen Type X in the blood as a screen for the presence of cancer, the use of antibodies that recognize and bind to the protein to visualize and locate tumors in the body, and the targeted delivery of tumor-destroying agents.

Biogen Idec and Regulus Therapeutics Form Collaboration to Explore microRNA Biomarkers for Disease Monitoring and Response to Therapy

Regulus Therapeutics Inc., a biopharmaceutical company leading the discovery and development of innovative medicines targeting microRNAs, announced today that it has entered into a collaboration with Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB) to identify microRNAs as biomarkers for multiple sclerosis (MS). Under the transaction, Biogen Idec will make an investment in Regulus in addition to upfront and milestone payments. The key objective of the collaboration is to identify microRNA biomarkers in the blood of patients with MS. Regulus believes that microRNA biomarkers may be used to select optimal patient segments in clinical trials, to develop companion diagnostics, and to monitor disease progression or relapse.

Cambridge Healthtech Associates and Nucro-Technics Announce Results of Market Research Investigation

Cambridge Healthtech Associates (CHA), the organizers of the Drug Safety Executive Council, and Nucro-Technics, a full-service Contract Support Organization, recently announced the results of a survey focused on a market evaluation of a new biomarker tool to predict adverse events. The goal of this market research project was to provide industry feedback on a novel fee-for-service assay for use in the evaluation of the potential toxicity of new drug candidates.
